Miss Major Griffin-Gracy
We are so grateful to be able to announce that on Trans Day of Visibility, THISTL selected the recipients of our 2025 Mutual Aid & Rental Assistance! This has been in the works for months with SO many of y'all promoting, commenting, donating, and sharing your stories.
We raised an amazing $3,950 this year from community contributions alone. THISTL then matched those donations up to $3,500 for a whopping grand total of $7,450!
These funds went directly to trans folks in need. With your help, we sent out checks to EIGHTEEN different trans adults in the metro area. This meant we got to help keep people's bills paid, keep a roof over their head, and provide various forms of relief for unhoused individuals. The impact of these funds has already started to show, just in the relief and the gratitude we hear in our recipient's voices.
Applications were accepted from February to March 2025. We held in person application events at multiple locations throughout North City, Mid St. Louis, and South City with virtual accommodations available by request. Our application process was smaller and more personal this year and we loved connecting with y'all 1:1 to share stories, dreams, and resources together.
Checks were sent out early April 2025. If you were selected as one of our 2025 recipients and have not gotten your check yet, please don't hesitate to email us at contact@thi-stl.org.
As a closing thought, keep in mind that we have always had and will most likely continue to have more applicants than we have funds available. The need of our community often overwhelms the existing systems meant to support them, especially now as we see unprecedented attacks on trans life at the national and state level. This means that not everyone gets selected even though their need may be just as great. If you were a part of this group, we hope you are able to stay safe and connect with community during these hard times. We hope to have more resources and information for renters available soon! In the meantime, here are some external resources that may be helpful:
We will have a full transparency report regarding our mutual aid demographics for 2025 available soon. If you'd like to review last years report, it is available further down on this page. Just like last year, we distribute funds based on need and in alignment with our racial equity pledge: at least 60% of total aid serves Black individuals, reflecting St. Louis demographics.
By donating to our organization, you can help us continue to provide essential services to the trans and gender nonconforming community. Your contribution will go towards supporting our programs and initiatives, and making a difference in the lives of those we serve. Closer to the end of 2025 we will have a 2026 mutual aid fundraiser with a link to donate to that cause specifically. In the meantime, please consider supporting our other work.
Housing insecurity disproportionately impacts Trans individuals, particularly BIPOC and disabled community members, who often face systemic barriers to safe and stable housing. According to our 2023 report, nearly 40% of respondents reported living below the federal poverty line, and 58% of respondents live with a disability or identify as disabled.
Our report highlights the challenges TGNC individuals face, including being forced out of family homes and encountering significant barriers to accessing emergency shelters and safe rental housing due to discrimination and a lack of resources. We distribute funds based on need and in alignment with our racial equity pledge: at least 60% of total aid serves Black individuals, reflecting St. Louis demographics.
For transparency, we posted anonymous race and gender identity demographics of our mutual aid recipients from the previous year, and you can see them at https://thi-stl.org/Assistance.
Applications will reopen in 2026. More information will be made available closer to that time.
We do not yet have our in person or virtual application schedule made for 2026, stay tuned!
Funds will be distributed by paper check - either sent to your landlord/mortgage holder directly or sent to the address specified in your application.
Please reach us at contact@thi-stl.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Currently, applicants can apply for up to 2 months of assistance total: the current month's rent as well as up to one month's back rent. We are currently able to offer up to $250/month for rental assistance.
Our mutual aid funds are specifically intended to benefit those who self identify as transgender or gender nonconforming. We do not ask for "proof" of your identity or transness, if you feel that this is a community you are a part of we encourage you to apply. If you are not trans or gender nonconforming, please refrain from submitting an application and look elsewhere at other resources that are not put aside for marginalized groups.
We know that online applications may be more accessible for some and we may be able to make case by case accommodations, but our applications are going to be primarily collected in person this year so we can connect with the community and prevent spam submissions.
Funds for 2025 were distributed early April 2025.
We don't have a hard limit, it will depend on a few factors such as: how much money we end up having available, how many folks apply, and how much assistance each of those applicants asks for. We aim to help as many as we can with the limited funds we have available.
Yes! All applicants who would like to be considered for our 2026 mutual aid assistance are encouraged to apply when that time comes.
